Jinji Lake guide: Capturing the moment, relaxing in style

Recommended visit duration: 2-4 hours, strolling, cycling, or photographing along the lake banks.

Best time to visit:

  • Seasons: Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most pleasant weather and beautiful scenery.
  • Time of the day: Dusk to night is ideal for photography. The lake comes alive with the light show at the Gate of the Orient, along with the vibrant night views of the Moon Pier and Ligong Causeway.

How to get there:

  • By metro:

(1) Line 1: Via Wenhuabolanzhongxin (文化博览中心), Shidaiguangchang (时代广场), and Dongfangzhimen (东方之门) stations, mainly serving the western and northern areas of the lake; direct access to Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre.
(2) Line 3: Dongfangzhimen (东方之门) and Ligongdixi (李公堤西) stations, offering convenient access to the western area of the lake and the Ligong Causeway scenic area.
(3) Line 5: Ligongdinan (李公堤南) station, leading to the Ligong Causeway to the south of the lake.
(4) Line 6: Qiongjidun (琼姬墩) station, connecting the western area of the Ligong Causeway and Qiongji Mound.
(5) Line 8: Jinjihudong (金鸡湖东) and Shidaiguangchang (时代广场) stations, reaching residential and business areas on the east bank of the lake.

  • By bus:

Bus No 100 (north/south lines), 130 (loop), 146, 178, 183, 156, 219, 28, 148, all serve Jinji Lake scenic area.

Top Experiences at Jinji Lake:

(1) Head to the terrace on the third floor of Suzhou Center Plaza and switch your phone to 0.5× ultra-wide mode to capture the trending picture of the Gate of the Orient – a must-have photo for your trip!

(2)Enjoy panoramic views from the Ash Balloon – a lake-view restaurant – on the 53rd floor of the Gate of the Orient. With a 180-degree view over Jinji Lake, it's an ideal spot for afternoon tea at a reasonable price, as well as sunset watching and photography.

(3) Music Fountain Show: Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm (lasting 30 minutes). Arrive early and choose to stand near the Moon Pier or the City Square for the best view.

(4) Jinji Lake scenic area is family-friendly, with open lawns, lakeside paths, and child-friendly facilities. Just be mindful near the water.

(5) A free water bus operates within the scenic area, running between Moon Pier and Wanghuge Pier from 10 am to 8 pm.

(6) Lively yet spacious, Jinji Lake is perfect for an evening stroll after dinner, with plenty of nearby shopping and dining options.

(7) Visit the lakeside Eslite Bookstore Suzhou (诚品书店苏州店), the only Eslite Bookstore on the Chinese mainland. Open from 10 am to 10 pm, it features a striking 72-step grand staircase, a favorite photo spot.

(8) Take a ride on the "Suzhou Eye" Ferris Wheel, the largest over-water Ferris wheel in Asia at 128 meters high, offering breathtaking and romantic views from above.

(9) Discover more creative photo locations, including the "Wings of Angel" sculpture near the Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art, and the giant frame sculpture beside the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre, perfectly aligned to "frame" the Gate of the Orient.
