Where to experience classical music in China: 10 must-visit venues

Updated: 2026-07-30 | China Bound

Hangzhou | Hangzhou Grand Theatre

An evening at the Hangzhou Grand Theatre is as much about the setting as the performance itself. Located in Qianjiang New Town in Hangzhou, East China’s Zhejiang province, the venue offers the perfect excuse to combine a concert with a stroll along the Qiantang River, where the city's skyline is especially beautiful after dark.

Recognizable by its crescent-shaped design, the theater forms the "Moon" of Hangzhou's iconic "Sun and Moon" skyline, alongside the nearby golden-domed International Conference Center, known as the "Sun". Inside, the shoebox-style concert hall is known for its warm acoustics and features a handcrafted pipe organ from Austria. While international tours are less frequent than in Beijing or Shanghai, the venue maintains a high-quality program of orchestral concerts, recitals, and visiting artists throughout the year.

Best for: Travelers exploring Hangzhou, pipe organ enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a relaxing evening of classical music by the Qiantang River.

Address: No 39 Xinye Lu, Sijiqing subdistrict, Shangcheng district, Hangzhou, Zhejiang province

Getting there: Take Metro Line 4 to Civic Center Station. The theater is about a five-minute walk from the station. Bus routes No71, 84, 156, and 991 also stop nearby at the Hangzhou Grand Theater or Civic Center bus stops.
