Set off on a scenic drive along China's G331 border highway which, known as the “most beautiful border highway”, winds through Jilin province’s mountain landscapes, riverside villages, and distinctive ethnic communities. In autumn, forests of the Changbai Mountains turn shades of gold, orange and crimson, while the Yalu and Tumen rivers trace stretches of the border with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Along the way, stop at charming villages, sample fresh local produce and discover the distinctive traditions of the Korean ethnic group in Northeast China. The G331 national highway also serves as a border tourism route that begins in Dandong, Liaoning province, stretches along the border in Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Gansu province, and ends in Altay in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in Northwest China.

Ideal for: Cultural explorers and self-driving road trip enthusiasts.

Best time to go
Visit in autumn, when the forests put on a colorful display. Late autumn offers a chance to enjoy the season’s changing hues, though foliage timing varies with elevation and weather.

Don’t miss
Discover Korean ethnic culture: Visit Korean ethnic villages in Yanbian Korean autonomous prefecture to explore traditional architecture, admire colorful folk costumes and discover local customs. Sample Korean-style specialties such as cold noodles and rice cakes, or enjoy traditional singing and dancing when cultural performances are available.

Sample seasonal mountain produce: Stop at rural villages and local markets along the route to discover seasonal mountain delicacies, from wild mushrooms and edible ferns to locally grown fruits and vegetables. Depending on the season, you may also have the chance to visit farms, pick fresh produce and savor authentic home-style dishes.

Explore the Changbai Mountains: Take a detour into the Changbai Mountain scenic area to admire forest-covered slopes, volcanic landscapes and pristine alpine scenery. In autumn, the mountains burst into shades of gold, orange and crimson, making the region ideal for hiking, photography and leisurely nature walks.

Follow the Yalu River: Follow the river through Dandong and its surrounding border landscapes, where peaceful waters, forested hills and riverside villages create a picturesque backdrop for your drive. Pause at designated viewpoints to photograph the scenery and learn about the region's history.

Take a restorative break in Hunchun: This border city reflects Chinese, Korean and Russian influences. Explore local bathhouses or spa facilities, enjoy a relaxing massage where available, and recharge with regional cuisine before continuing your journey.

Before you go
Mountain temperatures can drop sharply in autumn, so bring layers. Book accommodation in advance during peak foliage season, and check road and weather conditions before setting out.
