CHINA EXPERIENCE
Hidden deep in the mountains of the Baishuidong Scenic Area in Xinshao county, Shaoyang, Central China’s Hunan province, Bailong Cave is an underground wonder shaped by millions of years of geological change and flowing water. Its spectacular karst formations create a cool, tranquil world where every turn reveals a new natural marvel. One of the cave’s most striking sights is the “Underwater World”, where a shallow pool just a few centimeters deep mirrors countless stalactites overhead, creating a dreamlike scene of shimmering reflections. Another highlight is the “Nantian Divine Pillar”, a rare stone column soaring 18.2 meters high. Its intricate contours resemble nine coiling dragons, an eagle spreading its wings and a lion standing guard when viewed from different angles.
Beyond its visual appeal, Bailong Cave offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s geological past. Traces of ancient river channels and evidence of prehistoric marine environments reveal clues to the landscape’s evolution, while fossils of ancient animals, including giant pandas and saber-toothed elephants, have also been discovered here. At the on-site geological education center, visitors can explore how ancient seas gradually gave way to today’s mountains and learn about the forces that shaped this underground world. Combining extraordinary natural scenery with opportunities for scientific discovery, Bailong Cave is a rewarding destination for travelers eager to uncover the hidden wonders of Shaoyang.
