What is this square stone carving from the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) used for? It is actually an ancient inkstone, combining exquisite craftsmanship with ingenious functionality. On either side of the inkstone's center are an ear cup-shaped water well and a square brush-wiping area, while intricately carved motifs bring the stone to life — from lotus flowers, beads, clouds and dragons to beast riders, wrestlers, dancers, and other creatures. With such elaborate details, even grinding ink and writing became a ritual of art and elegance. Collection: Datong Museum in Shanxi province.
